We Turned a Skyscraper Into a Giant Camera

What happens to a room when the city is allowed to enter it?

Field dossier: New York

On the 33rd floor of Rockefeller Center, we joined legendary photographer Abelardo Morell to do something almost impossible: project the New York City skyline inside a custom-built camera obscura and turn a skyscraper into a camera.

A camera obscura is the foundation of every camera ever made, and the same principle your eyes rely on to see. Now Abe has pushed this idea further than anyone alive, building tent-sized cameras that can capture entire cities, landmarks, and what he calls: The Universe Next Door.
